Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu announced in State Legislative Assembly under Rule 110 that "BharatNet" Scheme will be implemented in Tamil Nadu through State Led Model and a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) namely Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation (TANFINET) will be incorporated for the same. The GoTN has issued a Government Order for the formation of SPV viz., Tamil Nadu Fibrenet Corporation (TANFINET) with a Share Capital of Rs.50 Lakhs to execute the BharatNet Project under which 12,525 Village Panchayats are planned to provide 1Gbps connectivity through Optical Fiber Network.
BharatNet is a flagship project of Government of India (GoI) funded by Universal Service Obligation Fund, Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communication to provide broadband connectivity at all GPs. BharatNet Project intends to provide internet access by laying optical fiber from Block to the Gram Panchayats and to enable the Government to provide e-service and e-applications across the State.
Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation was handling the BharatNet scheme which is now handled by newly incorporated TANFINET Corporation. The Government of Tamil Nadu has planned to build a fiber network across the State by leveraging the BharatNet Project. BharatNet project ensures connecting Gram Panchayats to Block-level Offices situated within the district. Geographical and administrative office location of Tamil Nadu State facilitates taking BharatNet Project till District level. Thus the vision of building robust fiber backbone for the State has been devised and Tamil Nadu Fibernet Corporation Ltd., (TANFINET) was formed by the State for implementation of the Project. Integrated fiber network connecting district of the State will enable to deliver larger services and benefits to the beneficiaries at Gram Panchayat level.
